The benefits of autonomous vehicles for community-based trip sharing

This work reconsiders the concept of community-based trip sharing proposed by Hasan et al. (2018) that leverages structure commuting patterns and urban communities to optimize sharing. It aims at quantifying benefits autonomous vehicles for sharing, compared a car-pooling platform where are driven their owners. In considered problem, each rider specifies desired arrival time her inbound (commuting work) departure outbound back home). addition, commute cannot deviate too much from duration direct trip. Prior motivated reducing parking pressure congestion in city Ann Arbor, Michigan, showed could reduce number close 60%. paper studies potential further needed serve all these trips. proposes column-generation procedure generates assembles mini routes trips, using lexicographic objective first minimizes required vehicle count then total travel distance.
